Love

My head and heart are full as I enter into this heavy week.  The city is chaotic right now with the upcoming election and the aftermath of the shooting of Walter Wallace Jr.

In the midst of all the chaos, Deb and I decided to carve a pumpkin on Saturday together for our one-on-one.  There is a store a few blocks down the road that has been selling pumpkins outside, and I have walked past it several times over the past few weeks.  Deb and I decided to buy one, carry it back to the house, and carve it together (plus roast the pumpkin seeds for a nice snack!).

After tossing around a few ideas about what to carve, we decided to carve the Philadelphia love sign (a sculpture in Center City).  We put the pumpkin in our window (one of the few carved pumpkins that I have seen in Kensington), and Tom rigged up a light inside.

As we head into this week that carries a lot of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty, our pumpkin displays a prayer for ourselves, our neighborhood, our city, our country, our world.  May love prevail this week, may we find ways to show love to ourselves and one another in the midst of this chaos, and may we rest in the love that God has for us.  Please keep my Mission Year team, the neighborhood of Kensington, and the city of Philadelphia in your prayers this week.
