Yellow Breeches Adventures - January Update

Greetings from snowy Harrisburg! We are cozied up inside today as the beautiful snow piles up around us, so I thought it would be a good day to write a blog update. Being back in Harrisburg has been a blessing. In this strange time of the pandemic, it is so good to be in a familiar place with close community. This "spring" (I still have the semester mentality, so even freezing January feels like part of the spring for me), I am interning with my college Adventure Education professor. Now that Messiah has ended the Adventure Education major, my professor has started a business ("Yellow Breeches Adventures") of facilitating adventure experiences for groups in the area. I will be helping him get things moving for the business this spring, as well as assisting him with any trips. A joy of being here is living with his family. I spent a lot of time with the Tanis family during my past three years at Messiah, so being back with them feels rather normal....

Yellow Breeches Adventures - April Update

I only have a few weeks left here in Harrisburg. April has been quite a full month, with many adventures including the Good Friday paddle, Easter celebrations, our Homeschool Caving Course, kayaking trips for Messiah's Outdoors Club, and trainings for the final group of Adventure Education students. I am thankful to have had many hours on the water over the past month. Paddling is one of my favorite activities, and as the weather has warmed up and spring has sprung, Dave and I have enjoyed many paddling trips. Dave has a tradition of paddling on Good Friday. He has been doing so for about twenty years, and I have joined for the past few years while at Messiah. The weather was literally freezing this year (low 30s), and I considered not going, assuming that it might be miserable, but nevertheless, a group of us headed to the Stony Creek (about an hour and a half away) for some whitewater canoeing and rafting. Deciding to Leave

Being stuck in the house for our third quarantine spurred me to spend some time reflecting. I realized how draining my work for the school has been over the past few months; doing the monotonous work of making hundreds of phone calls each week without the context of relationship with the school, staff, students, or families was difficult, even painful. It was painful to not feel like there was much meaning or purpose in what I was doing (though I could rationalize meaning, it was difficult to conjure up the feeling), and working virtually just felt joyless. I began to realize that it may not be sustainable for my well-being for me to continue this work for six more months. Then, Jenny announced that she would be not be continuing the program. Jenny's decision seemed to empower me to seriously consider making the same decision for myself. After a few days of discernment and prayer, I felt very strongly that it would be best for me to leave the program ...
